Considered to be one of the most dangerous types of injuries, brain injuries are unfortunately becoming more common today. Between the physicality of sports, and the increasing amount of car accidents occurring, the number of annual brain injuries is certainly on a rise.

Here are the top 3 causes of traumatic brain injuries:

Certainly, some of the most well-known causes of brain injuries are slip and fall accidents where the head is hit on the ground or another object. Luckily, in most cases, these brain injuries are not too bad, leaving most with only a hurt head or a minor concussion. In some cases, though, the hit can be hard enough to cause life-threatening damage, sometimes being fatal. Falls account for 35% of all brain injuries.

Car Accidents

Another leading cause of many injuries in general – not just brain injuries – are auto accidents. Understandably, car accidents can leave someone with a very serious head injury, whether it be from whiplash, or from smashing their head into something in the car. Unfortunately, car accidents are the leading cause of death from serious brain injury. Auto accidents account for 17% of all brain injuries.

Being Struck by Another Force (Sports)

In general, being struck by another object or force is the next leading cause of brain injury. This normally correlates to a sports-related injury, whether it is a player to player collision or collision with another object on the field or court. While most sports require protection – be it a helmet or mouth guard, or even both – they still account for a lot of brain injuries and concussions. Being struck by another person/object accounts for 16% of all brain injuries.
