Speeding May Have Played a Role in Fatal Squirrel Hill Tunnel Crash

A 27-year-old man was killed recently when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic outside the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, according to an article in the Philadelphia Post-Gazette. Now, investigators believe that speeding may have played a role in the car accident—and that if so, the speeding was consistent with the driver’s history of speeding and reckless driving.

The driver lost his life in a head-on collision with another car that occurred after his vehicle crossed the center median on the outbound side of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel. The driver of that vehicle, a 60-year-old Philadelphia woman, was injured in the accident.

Investigators uncovered several instances in which the deceased driver had been charged with speeding and reckless driving in the past, including two guilty pleas for speeding, one for driving the wrong way, and one for failing to obey traffic lights. Police say they are uncertain whether the accident was the result of negligence, or whether it was intentional.

The accident shut down I-376 for nearly two hours, forcing police to reroute vehicles back to previous exits rather than forcing them to sit and wait for the scene to be cleared.

Negligent driving occurs when drivers fail to take due care to prevent an accident. Distraction, speeding, and similar behaviors are examples of a failure to take due care. It only takes a split second of careless driving to cause devastating crashes on the roadway. Those injured by this behavior have legal options, including the option to pursue compensation if needed.

If you’ve been injured by a distracted driver, don’t hesitate to contact an experienced Pennsylvania personal injury lawyer who can help you seek the compensation you need.
